Scents That Positively Impact the Home

If you are selling a house, real estate agents often suggest to add a scent before a showing. The idea is to capture a potential purchaser’s attention so that his or her mind is directed to thoughts of home. Hopefully he or she will be inspired to make an offer for the house.

A Welcoming Place to Unwind

Even if you do not have any plans to sell your house, you still want to make sure that the environment is a welcoming place to unwind. If you take on responsibilities in the real world, it is doubtful that you have time to bake delicious treats or thoroughly clean your home so that it gives off a scent that is inviting and fresh.

Bring Some Water to a Boil

So, if you want to make your home smell like “home” and give it a pleasant aroma, you can choose from a number of options. For example, in the colder months of the year, place a pot of water on the stove and bring it to a boil. Then throw in some sticks of cinnamon along with a couple cloves. Let the boiling concoction simmer on low heat for about an hour. Your home, in turn, will smell warm and spicy. You can also experiment with ingredients such as vanilla, ginger, or allspice.

A Neutral Palette

Using baking soda will give your house a fresh smell too. Therefore, sprinkle some of the powdery substance on sofa cushions and carpets. Allow it to sit about 15 minutes before vacuuming it. Baking soda absorbs unsavoury odours and will provide your home with a neutral palette. Sprinkle the powder in the rubbish bin to get rid of unpleasant odours there as well. Make it a practice to keep your home smelling clean and fresh.

Burn Fragranced Candles

In order to complement the effects of the baking soda, it is also a good idea to burn scented candles. Some of the scents that are popular include sandalwood and cedar, grapefruit, rose, strawberries and vanilla, and lemongrass and verbena.

Use Citrus as a Diffuser

Naturally, vanilla is well-loved as it offers a homey aroma. Citrus scents are popular as well. That is because the use of a citrus-based scent causes people to think of an environment that is clean and crisp. So, if you want to get rid of any unwelcome scents in your garbage disposal unit, throw an orange or lemon rind along with some ice cubes down the drain and then turn on the disposal. This simple practice will eliminate any unpleasant kitchen odours. Since the kitchen is a popular hangout in the home, it pays to take this type of cautionary measure when you are freshening up the air.

Besides scenting the air with candles, you can also use essential oils. However, oils can be strong so you want to make sure you burn oils that appeal to the nostrils of most people. That means avoiding strong and polarising scents such as ylangylang or patchouli. Instead, choose such scents as grapefruit or lavender.

When you use the above approaches, you can make your home a welcoming and friendly place for friends, families, and, in some cases, possible buyers of your real estate.
